Wednesday 10 September 2014 marked the opening ceremony of the first ever Invictus Games.
2014 has been an amazing summer of sport for the UK. Hot on the heels of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and just before the start of the Ryder Cup, Wednesday 10 September 2014 marked the opening ceremony of the first ever Invictus Games. Conceived by Prince Harry, the Games celebrate the importance of sport in the recovery process of injured, wounded and sick service personnel.
During the four days of the Games, over 400 competitors from 13 nations competed in venues on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The nine sports included wheelchair rugby, sitting volleyball and road cycling.
Creative Technology (CT) was enlisted by CSM to provide sports presentation services at all five venues; the first large-scale multi-sport event held at the Olympic Park since 2012. The package of services included video control, integrated scoring and camera systems augmenting the BBC live coverage at the venues. The exception to this was Here East where the entire sports coverage was delivered by CT. These services were based on those developed for Panasonic at London 2012 - an event which brought greater focus to sports presentation and audience experience at major events.
Individual requirements for each venue were also addressed. At the Lee Valley Athletics Centre CT supplied a 100sqm Mobile LED screen, along with an Outside Broadcast vehicle; the latter was also used at the Aquatics Centre. At the VeloPark CT installed four screens around the track, providing the spectators with a close view of the action.
The Copper Box Arena, home to the wheelchair basketball, was equipped with four 14sqm LED screens hung as a Gondola over the court.
Finally, at Here East, where the archery, powerlifting and indoor rowing took place, CT delivered two LED relay screens in addition to a comprehensive video system in order to match the specific requirements of archery, weightlifting and indoor rowing.
CT’s Project Manager Nic Maag commented “We’re really pleased to have worked on such a prestigious event! Our focus, as always, is providing the best possible experience for the audience and we’re confident we delivered CSM’s vision for the event.”
CT was also involved with the opening and closing ceremonies, supplying a Flyer 18 Upstage Centre LED screen. CT’s Project Manager for this part of the project, Jilon Miah, said “It’s not every week we get Michelle Obama on our screens! What a coup!”
